Spring Compressor

Post by SynthDesign »

Coolest tool in a long time for me. I did the math after the last spring compressor failed and an ER trip was much more than the cost of this tool. And free shipping!

I had to remove the return spring from the ram but I get about 170mm out of it now instead of the four inches it came stock.

I'm glad this wasn't around when I did Golde's back in '07. I bought the HF clamshell for $30. I would have been sore tempted towards this one.
Were you kidding about the trip to the ER - from suicide sticks, I presume?

I've had the harbor freight units fail on me multiple times. There was a very close call last time and I was lucky to only have my hand pinned to car. I said the next time I'd go at it with the proper tool instead of stupidity. Plus this thing only takes a matter of seconds to operate and at this point, time and safety are worth the money.

Since you mention HF units, I presume you mean the suicide sticks and not the clamshell, right?
The clamshell worked just fine, if a bit village-blacksmithy.

I've got the cheapy HF unit....

I used mine 1X on 1 spring....did lube the threads and tried to stay away from the ends of the spring. Chinese stuff seems to usually have poorly hardened or heat treated metal parts...using low grade steel and fasteners?

There is an issue with an hydraulic compressor? I've had a Sears trolley jack drop suddenly after it ran low on jack fluid...would want to keep the fluid level topped up?

One of the reviewers bought 2 sets of these and used 3 per spring for added safety.

This tool has sooooo paid for itself already! I made $80 at pick and pull just helping a few people pull springs off domestic vehicles today. In less than a dozen uses the tool is paid off plus some.

Side note, if you pick it up, grad an extra 1 liter bottle of hydraulic fluid as it leaks a bit during storage and transportation. I topped mine off this morning just to be safe.
