High RPM at Idle?
Hello, I'm new to tercel4wd.com. I just got my hands on an '83 tercel 4WD SR5. I don't know much about these, or mechanics in general, but I'm trying to get it into good driving shape. After messing around with it I've finally got it to start and drive around. The only thing that seems off now is the car idle's at 3,000 which seems pretty high to me. Any pointers or ideas on what that might be would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Check your vacuum lines from the TVSV to the carb, you may have the liines swapped at the high idle servo (thats on the front -closest to the grill- of the carb. There's a great color coded vacuum line layout somewhere here-In the Repair Guides section maybe? It's not for an '83, but they are all a little different. Also use the carb section of the FSM for a tuning/setting procedure, it REALLY helps set the carb up right.
If the vac lines are set up right, I'd spray some carb cleaner at each vacuum line connection to see if they are leaking at all. With all of the vacuum spaghetti, its usually a good bet one is sucking air when it shouldn't.

If you have a poor running car of unknown history...best bet is probably to find the exact vac diagram for your year car...Fed.... or Cal...or Canadian.....and check the hose routing in DETAIL...cause somebody might have been messin' around.
Be real careful when "reading" those diagrams...they are very tricky as to which hose ends up where.
There is a page on this forum with the diagrams.
Not only the routing...but loose ends that leak. If you can only get it to run at a high idle...that would probably indicate a vac leak....idle circuit not functioning due to the leak.

Give a boy a gun-give a biatch a cell phone-and pretty soon you almost got yourself a police state.
