The re-circ one does work you can see it pretty easy through the glove box. its apparantly the selector one, I think I found the other end of that cable and all looks well
IT IS MOST DEFINATELY A BROKEN PLASTIC THING!
dontcha hate plastic!
hmmm. perhaps you are right it must be internal, where the lever goes inside the box huh? the lever does move way to easy,
That will require removing the whole damn thing! perhaps it's ok for now!

Re: Poor output from heater/defrost vents
You usually do not have to remove it, most you can check externally. The first thing to check is where the cables attach on the back of the control panels. This comes out and you remove the surrounding trim, and the screws holding the heater control console are than easy to get at.
The other thing you can do is remove the trim panels under the instrument panel and the glove box and see if all the other ends of the cables are connected and operating the flap panels to their full range. If you do not have AC it is easy to remove the duct that connects the blower to the heater box, with it out of the way you can inspect if the flap in there is opening all the way or not. You can also see another door through the heater outlet, which you should be able to see by sticking your head under the dash, at most you can just remove the trim panel that surrounds the radio.
Good luck.
