What are the benefits of brass gears?
What can be done to increase the HP handling of the drive train, I'd assume beefier gears in the tranny and diffs.

never heard of brass gears before, i'm not too good with transmissions

Can you bring your car to a shop and they'll strengthen the transmission for you? Cuz my civic automatic tranny i heard is weak, so too much extra power and the thing would go kaput

I don't know, but I want to know. Brass is not as strong as steel but I do know that it has good frictional properties, meaning that it has less friction, and is more self-lubricating. That might make it better since gears usually fail by scoring at the contact points rather than breaking of the teeth... Still, I have studied gear mechanics and failure modes and contact stresses, and read some books about transmission design (they don't go into enough detail) and still don't know exactly what material is best for gears. For the Tercel, I know 20V Tercel on here got his transmission rebuilt with costom gears, he said they were brass, and steel gears in the differential, and it handled his boosted 20 valve. I want to call the tranny shop that did it and ask them what all they replaced. I want to make a Tercel tranny with stronger gears, better synchros and rear wheel drive / 4 wheel drive configuration. It won't be that easy.

Perhaps just a higher grade of steel? It would be nice to be able to boost the engine more. I wonder if the driveshaft might have to be replaced too.

I used brass for the simple reason that our cases are not that strong. If the the gear slips it will maul it not break it and send pieces thru the casing. Alot of tranny places use neoprene laced steel gears witch are great except when they snap, they destroy everything. Brass-aloy, allthough soft, allow for a much better meshing and if something nasty happens, it doen't jam and destroy the otuput shafts etc. The gearing my car is not quite the same as you would find in your transmission. I had the low gears removed so that there were only 5fwd gears and 1 rev. Also, strengthening welds were placed over the case to stop torsion breaks in the case.

diff gears are high tensile steel (the usual stuff) and indexed to match front and rear.

It's not a difficult thing to do its just that some gears have to be custom milled. Beware, if you do not have any connections as i did, it is EXPENSIVE

They guaraneed my setup from drop start to 350hp.
