drive belt pulley broke (and rad fix)

Post by Kumppari »

Not really a repair question as I allready fixed it, but I tought that I should put a samll story up here for others to enjoy.

So I was driving to do some shopping when I noticed steam coming out under the hood, and temp-o-meter was really high. I quikly stopped and popped the hood and sure enough water was boiling away happily. My fist tought was that as I have the block heater plugged up all day when im at work, it must have evaporated water out of the cooling system. I added water, let it cool a bit and headed back home. Well, it heated up again. Luckily I was close to home and managed to limp the rest of the way by pulling over and letting it cool from time to time.

as I got back home I quickly found out the problem:

The rubber separating the two pulley halves failed.
Seeing as this is not a damping type pulley, I decided to make a quick and dirty fix with electric glue:

Tricky part was to get the two halves alinged so that the crack where the rubber was in would be evenly big all around. I used 4mm bolts. Also cheked it in a lathe to see that it was centered, which it was (almost) bang on. Its brobaly not in perfect balance any more, but as it is not terribly big or heavy and the weight is quite close to the cenerline of the crankshaft im hoping it wont matter too much.

I also took a picture of my radiator. Its looks quite bad, but amaizingly enough it doesent leak, and my tercel has never overheated (apart from the broken pulley) even after I put in the turbo. Altough that may change during summer when I will not be using the heater...

I put my spare rad in...the other one didn't leak...but had a few missing fins...I'm surprised that rad cools at all.

saying few fins missing , look like 80 % gone , FINS help to make " AIR" swirls around the tubes , with out them , air just goes right direct throught to engine

Well, summer is almost here and the days are warm enough that I dont need to use the heater anymore. Except that as I feared, the radiator is just not effective enough anymore, so I ended up having to keep using the heater at full blast, sweating like a pig.

Broplem is that I dont have a spare and I dont know what (if any) car would have a radiator that would be close enough to be able to fit in. So its time for a nother quick and dirty fix. Rather than replacing the radiator (wich still doesent leak) and possibly having to modify non-original one to fit, I decided to just add an extra one.
Image
I drilled a hole through the vacuum-line-connetor-switch-tingy that I wasnt using anymore anyway and attached a hose to it.

Image
water return is routed to lower radiator hose through a heat sensor fitting that I bought from a local tuning shop, about 9€. Only part that I had to buy.

Extra radiator is located where the headlights washer used to be. It is a heater core from ford taunus, incidentally the very same project car that the turbo and carburetor came from.

As with keeping in line with my motto for the tercel, almost all of the parts are salvaged or begged/borrowed from friends. And it works great, temps dropped to same level where they were during winter. Cheap and effective.

Only drawback is that as the little rad doesent have fan, it doesent help much in traffick, and I no longer have headlight washer. But both are little consern to me as I dont spent much time in satnding still, or washing my headlights. I didnt even know how to operate the washer until recently when I accidentally discovered how it worked. Tought that it was broken before that.
