transmission swap

I bought a 86 4wd wagon and the transmission slams out of gear what could this problem be? I got a 84 parts car and hope that the tranny will work any info would be greatly apreciated. I live in whitefish montana anyone in the area

make sure fluid is topped off, in all the spots, there's 3 for the tranny

Check the shifter box for crumbled bushings and rust too. Easily done from a front seat. If fluid and shifter are ok, things are probably not so good.

You will have to swap out the rear axle to go along with your parts tranny as the ratio is different. If it comes to that.

It is not a good sign for your trans. If you need to swap the tranny, you could either swap out the old ring and pinoin from the front diff off the old trans axle, or as suggested above also swap out the rear diff. The newer one has a lower gearing and is better for off road and steep hills. The older one has a lower final ratio and is better for highway use (less noise since engine is running at lower RPMs).
