random blue smoke

Post by mightyterc »

hey all i recently got my first terc, and am over the moon about it!! Its had a different engine put in it about 3 years ago - i dont know what it is but the coil is in the dizzy if that helps.

but i got a weee problem. I get random blue smoke out exhaust - i dont know what goin on coz its so random, sometimes it will be fine, but sometimes when taking off, huge blur smoke blows out the back leaving an embarrassing curtain of smoke on the road haha.

If anyone knows what engine i have, or the smoke problem that weould be great.. :D :D :D

cheers

hmm... blue smoke is usually a result of oil leaking into the combustion chamber, thus burning & creating that blue smoke. To actually see if it is this, i would recommend a oil additive such as bardahl's no-smoke (i dont know if you have that in aus.) but generally buy the best additive you can afford. this is NOT a permanent repair, i would recommend that you get new piston rings if the no-smoke solves this problem.

A pic of the engine would help, ive seen basically every toyota engine out there, lol. chances are it is a 3A, 3AC, or a 4AC. is it carbed, or fuel-injected (i know guys FI is a loong shot.)

I had the same problem. New valve stem seals solved the problem. I didn't do anything to the rings and my engine has close to 350,000 MILES on it. You can do the job without pulling the head. (I pulled the head to clean the combustion chamber and piston tops and also to check the valve seat condition.)

If the smoke occure intermittenly it is not likely the pistion rings (which would occure every time you drive it). I could be either the PVC valve is allowing oil into the air cleaner and it is sloshing into the carb, or it could be the valve stem seals as noted earlier.

The PVC valve you check by simply opening the air cleaner and see if it is full of oil. You can buy an OEM PVC valve at any auto parts stors for a few dollars, it attaches to the gromet in the valve cover with a short hose that goes into the aircleaner. It might be possible to take the old one out and clean it with carb cleaner, but they are cheap enough to just replace.

Replacing the valve stem seals is a bit more complicated, but if you can do it your self is not expensive (about $12).

I do not know of anything else that might cause this kind of intermittant oil burn.

no worries cheers all the help is great, i dont think its the PVC valve coz that was the first thing i checked, the air cleaner seemed fine. The engine has a sticker on it saying 3A-L90BF and yes, its carby not injected, i need 2 go 2 a wreckers today to get a new ignition barrell so i might ask the wreckers dude. Maybe a toyota corolla engine or something maybe?? I say that because tercels are almost as rare as polar bears down here in aust haha. i dunno ill post some pics this arvo,

cheers again guys

CV joints are the same for 83-86 Terc sedans/83-88 wagons. So you can grab em from an 84 no problem.

I don't think they're the same joints from the corolla.

They'res about 3 other tercel forum Members in WA, you could do a search and perhaps PM about where they get thier parts from.

Also, I got this quote from a company on the net you could try them. Looks like they'll freight it to you in WA as well.

The issue is going to be the length of the axles. Chances ore that the CV joints will be either identical or at least interchangeable, but wheel track and engine/transmission placement may require different axle lengths.

I got a pair of EMPI's from Autopartswarehouse.com and have been very happy with them. $92 USD ea.
