Ok, I went yesterday to my uncle's house and to reach his house you have to climb to approx. 4,500 feet. My dad's ZZE110 Corolla has the 1.8L 1ZZFE if I'm not mistaken. It did pretty well at that altitude and didn't notice too much horsepower loss. Does the VVT-i have anything to do with this as Takza always stating how much advanced timing makes the difference. I can't deny that we should of taken the Tercel (not supposed to be driven) and there would of have been loads of fun, maybe not if you end up in the slow vehicle lane. At around 4,500 feet how much horsepower will the Tercel lose?

VVT-i = intelligent variable valve timing. The 2ZZGE has VVTL-i which = intelligent variable valve timing and lift.

The valve timing part is 100% variable and is electronically controlled (hence the intelligent). The ECU will vary the cam timing depending on many engine parameters, (namely engine rpm and throttle position), to give the most efficient cam timing under any given condition.

I do not know for sure if the ECU takes into consideration atmospheric pressure when varying the cam timing. There are many websites out there discussing Toyota VVT-i and VVTL-i. I would recommend reading to find the answer to your question. (or maybe someone here will know )
