Hit and Run

Post by HomeSkool »

Not so happy today.
I've been trying to keep my car in as good of shape as I can
since the body work and new paint job.

Yesterday someone in the parking lot where I work backed into
my car and ripped a nice new hole in the bumper. Did'nt really dent
the bumper but just pushed it in enough that it poped a hole so I can
now see the foam stuff inside. It did do it's job and saved the metal
from dents. But none the less I need to look into fix/replacement.

I don't know if anyone in the Victoria area has a rear bumper and or
someone with a beater Terc would do a swap with me? I am looking
into somehow just glueing it back together and maybe if I paint the
entire bumper it won't be noticeable anyways. But before I do all the
work just wanted to check with you guys.

Thanks guys

Wow, that really sucks. I'd swap mine with you, but I think mines in even worse shape than yours. Too bad the ICBC deductible for comprehensive claims is so unreasonable these days. You could try Malahat autoparts.

Is there no suitable patching kit available? Or is it bad enough to be unfixable?

There very well might be some type of patching Kit.

But yes, It is worth repairing if I can figure out how. I was thinking
about some type of apoxy? I can clean it up nicely and it is in tact
the only real problem is that the skin peeled back on the top of the
bumper. I'll find a digital camera and take a picture soon. If I can
glue it down and fill in the cut lines so water does'nt leak in I'm sure
it would'nt look too bad. Not worth the cost of finding a replacement bumper
anyways. Not at this time anyways.

Anyone know what might work? Hopfully some Apoxy that might be black
as well so I don't have to worry about colour?

Thanks

SilaSeal silicone might work quite well. It's a construction caulking material that I use at Woodmaster to waterproof all the exterior panel connection on the stoves. And it comes in a nice black as well.

One problem is it is rather shiny in finish. If your bumpers are anything like mine, they are FAR from shiny any more!! :p

Good Morning,

Sorry to hear about the bumper accident. How awful, just afew a new paint job and all- its murphy's law I tell ya'.

I had to repair a hole ad a crack in my back bumper and I found this stuff at Kragen called bumper repair kit by Bondo. Its two tubes of black and yellowish color acrylic stuff. Worked great on the long vertical crack and I just used a bungie cord to hold the crack together for it to dry. The only thing is its shiny and blacker than the color of my bumper, but I will sand alittle and touch up paint it with a dull black color to match.

Just to let you know, if you have any buddies here in Nevada, I was in Carson City PickNPull yesterday, to find a couple of small parts for my Tercel, they had 6 of them on hand and as I recall, one had a pretty decent looking bumper and one 87 had tweed front and back seats in excellent condition. I was definitely continplating them for my Tercel....

Anyway, good luck with the repair and or replacement of your bumper.

bumper repair

Well, when my hit and run happened the car was in my driveway.Somebody plaing in the snow slammed the RR corner. From the Gas fill port back was smeared over.Deck lid, bumper, etc. Not only that, the car was spun 90 deg and thrown forward into my pickup,so the LR pass door was caved in.I had a shiny red original paint job.Now I am kamiphloj.
For about $30 you can get a Devcon Flexane 2 part urethan elastomer kit from an outfit called MSC.They will show up in a search.I think they have a catalogue on CD they will send you.Bolts,fateners,tools,welders,steel,aluminum,machines,welders,paint,everything.This stuff is black and like a dead blow hammer.Another possibility is find somebody who Rhino-coats truck boxes.Maybe dremel the hole clean and they can help you if you show up when they do a truck .Nice car.kamiphloj
Like my old Volvo 544 with 4wd.I seldom regret neversieze or threadlocker

Wow, that does suck! If I lived in BC, I'd try to lend you some money to help you out. :) If I may be of any help to you or anyone, let me know ASAP. Thank you. I hope your repair goes smoothly and if some asshole bumps into your Tercel again, exchange insurance and tell your insurance company that you fully restored your Terc so its mint and that you require a lot of insurance claims for it, I guess and get that sucker repaired ASAP. Again, let me know if I can help you. :)
