My '87 turbo intercooled Tercel

We all know what a Tercel looks like, but here's some pics of a turbo-charged intercooled Tercel under the hood. If you don't see the pics, try right-click and "view image" or whatever YOUR browser says. I hope these pics are of help or at least inspiration to someone. I wish all our Tercels could be like mine, but unfortunately I bought mine the way it is, so I can't give much advice.

I didn't even want the turbo, I just wanted a second Tercel with as few kilometers as possible and as little rust as possible. This one had 100 000 kilometers less than all the others (230 000 kilometers to be exact), and is practically rust-free so I decided to take a chance on the turbo. If something goes wrong, the factory service manual won't be very useful, since just about everything has been modified for better performance, which I am some what worried about, but the car is so fast, I forget my worries when I'm driving.

If someone can get the pictures to show up without excessive clicking and whatnot, be my guest.

I'll post more pictures of my Tercels when I get a chance, but they're just a white '87 with an electric sunroof and a red 84 with no nothing. Nothing special about them on the outside except the big exhaust pipe on the white '87 turbo one.

Cool pictures! I think that is the first turbo 3A engine I've ever seen! How does your car handle the power? How much power does the setup make? Do you know what turbo is being used? How much boost?

The car handles the power fine, front wheels skid at scary speeds. The clutch has been swapped to a sintered one, the stock clutch slipped. It has been measured at 170 hp with the clutch slipping. It is a Garrett gt40 if I remember correctly, I'll have to check. Maximum boost is about 14 psi, probably too much in the long run.

That's really cool! :D

You might want to replace the rusty steel intake tubing with aluminum or stainless steel. If they're rusty on the inside too, you could be feeding your engine rust flakes.

Hard to believe a 3AC can handle 14 PSI...not too mention the car handling 170 HP.

I can't keep my front tires from spinning in the rain with maybe 70 HP.

I'd turn the boost down and check that trans oil.....

GT40.................? Errrrmmm........ Those are huge?

Who was it that said boosting doesn't effect torque? I have some 7.3L Powerstroke owners who might beg to differ... And some Semi drivers... Schoolbus drivers.... Or anyone who's lost a turbo towing near their max and suddenly find 10mph their max.....

Like I said, I didn't do it, I bought it like this. I don't know anything about turbos. I say gt40 because that is what it says on the car's registration papers. I may be wrong, but I don't think the bit that sits on top of the carb is "the turbo"?

All that is is an intake charge "hat" for the carb. Creates a seal for the pressurized air on top of the carb.
The best way to see what kind of turbo is to get the numbers off the castings in the turbo itself. Most turbo's will have their manufacturer, AR ratio, things like that on them. Some even have the model on them (i.e. GT40vs GT65) Part of why I want to see that turbo....

If you can get ahold of him, please ask what he did to prepare the internals and soon.
We're all pretty excited about this methinks... lol
