Oil Leaks

Post by RedRum »

Just bought a 84 Tercel 4x4 Wagon run's great but has a major oil leak.
Can't really get a good look but it appears to coming from the top rear of the engine.
It also seems to need new cv joints?
Makes a weird noise on the hard turns?
Are these difficult repairs?
Any help appreciated or please pass on the name of your mechanic if in the Vancouiver Area

* valve cover gasket?...there is a writeup on this

* noise in turns might be the axles...maybe Cardone replacements? plus new side seals? Lots of info on this job.

Neither job is that big a deal...if you've done them before...there are a few things to watch for though.

the rubber "o" ring on the distributer shaft gets hard with age and will cause leakage. but it's most likely the valve cover gasket.
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Might even be the camshaft half-moon seal/plug thingy? Might've cracked with age and fatigue and is leaking out the back?

Try and clean the block off with a good engine cleaner. Don't waste your money on 4 billion cans of the spray stuff, maybe even just use 50/50 Simple Green Heavy Duty and water, combined with a good scrubber brush. Makes things shiny... Trust me. Then pressure wash (CAREFULLY) the engine. Will likely get water in the distributor, so you can either stuff some paper towel in there before you start, or dry it out afterwards.
The point being that the cleaner it is, the easier it is to see fresh leaks, allowing easier pinpointing of the place where its leaking from.

Don't think an article was ever done...but there's a lot of info here and there.

SEARCH: CV....axle...halfshaft

It is an extremely easy job. Just make sure you have some grease and a new axle seal.

Remove the wheel, brakes, and rotor. MARK YOUR ALIGNMENT CAM SETTINGS! Loosen axle nut. I believe that I removed the wheelbearing/hub assy but I can't remember if that was on my Jeep or the Terc. I do remember removing the bolts from the under side of the ball joint.

Anyhoo, once the CV is seperated from the hub, give it a serious yank straight out. Some gentle persuasion from a prybar or screw driver may be necessary. Be sure to get the old seal out and clean up the seal surface.

To re-install, insert new seal first. A piece of pipe or large socket may come in handy here, but mine was very clean and I only needed my fingers. Apply a decent amount of grease to the new axle stub and to the seal. Gently guide the stub end through the seal being careful not to damage the seal with the axle splines. Once the end is through and the splines are lined up with the diff, give it a good push to get the spring-loaded snap ring to seat. I believe that I used a plastic mallet to ensure it seating.

Re-assemble the wheel/hub. remember to return any alignment cams to their original position. This is also a great time to replace brakes, ball joints, tie rod ends, struts, or wheel bearings......if any are needed.

Don't think you want to mess with the 2 bolts holding the strut...just the 2 at the ball joint...and maybe loosen the swaybar bolts at front. Think the tierod end needs removing.

As far as the seal...use axle grease on the outside (and inside) and be SURE to get them in EVEN or square.
