is my car a freek!!

Post by 83toybeater »

First off my car, its a 83 sr5 with 275000 miles, kyb front struts, 195/75/14s, round 2 inch thick rubber spacers, and no muffler. Other than that and basic tune up items its original.

Here is what happened
Here in FL Arizona we got a good 18+ inches of snow in the last 2 days. last night I went out to the cinder pits with 2 lifted Chevy with 35s followed by a jeep. There was a good 8 inches on the ground everywhere that it wasn’t built up in thicker drifts. One Chevy got stuck, just cause he was being stupid in 2wd then tried to get out in 2wd and sunk like a rock. Then out in the middle of a large pit there was these 2 guys with lifted land rovers with murders, snorkels, wenches, and everything else you could possibly slap on it. They both came up to me when i was waiting for everyone to catch up, and said that little thing is so f@cking amazing, to see a little station wagon leading 2 big Chevy’s and proceeded to talk about how they have been driving into a creator that’s filled with snow and getting buried, Then would pull each out. After they promised to pull me out I proceed to go to the creators. With a crowed of like 15 people I went around to the back side of the creator and dropped in and made it across the center, (had to of been half up my doors), It ran out of power right as all 4 tires got on the incline, I then ebrake and slipped the clutch and attempted to crawl out a few times with it just dieing. Finally I get it to stick and it just crawls out ever so slowly. Everyones was cheering it was so funny, the center of attention is a 275$ car while 40 thousand dollar rigs sit to the side.

Oh and today we went threw the mountains on a closed road in knee deep snow. I got stuck a couple of times because I had snow build up in my wheel wells and couldn’t turn enough to correct out of the hood high snow. The snow was so deep I had to stop and clear out a hole for the radiator to breath, it got very hot today right under the top white line, but when I cleared it would cool down quick.

Its just amazing what this car can do, I wonder if all of our cars are really that good even that daily commuter that never goes off road, or is mine a “freakâ€

Essentially any "A" family engine.
3 "A" -C. 4 "A" -GE.

Here's what I could grab off Wikipedia.

3A's. All 3A engines share the 1.5L (1452cc) displacement.
Cal-Spec, Jap Spec, Transverse, and "Swirl-Intake". 3A-C, 3A-U, 3A-L, 3A-S.
Power ranging from 62HP(46KW) @4800RPM to 90HP(67KW) @6000RPM.
75ft/lb(101nM) @2800RPM to 89ft/lb(120nM) @4000RPM.
In other words, our little 3A blocks can take up to 90 horses. I assume the 90HP, 89ft/lb comes from the 3A-SCV?

4A engines. All 4A engines share the 1.6L (1587cc) displacement.

4A-C. Cal-Spec. 70-90HP(52-67KW) @4800RPM. 85ft/lb(105NM)@2800RPM.
Where in the hell do they get 90 from? I've seen 74 horses rated, but never 90!

4A-E. Fuel Injected 4A. 78HP(58KW) @5600RPM. 87ft/lb(117NM)@4000RPM.
Never heard of this one....

4A-ELU. Jap-Spec Transverse 4A-E. 100HP(75KW)@5600RPM. 101ft/lb(136NM)@4000RPM.
Once again, never heard of this. Sounds nice though....

4A-F. Carbed DOHC 16valve. 90HP(67KW)@6000RPM . 95ft/lb(128NM)@3600RPM.
Never seen one, but have heard. Again, sounds nice.

4A-FE. Fuel Injected 4A-F. 102HP (76KW)@5800RPM. 101ft/lb(136NM)@4800RPM.
This sounds alright. I hear these get really good fuel economy.

4A-GE engines. How Wikipedia describes this is scetchy... It seems like they encompass all 3 generations in the power ratings, yet they later describe the 20v and the GZE.
16v High-Performance inline 4. 112HP(84KW)@6600RPM to 138HP(103KW) @7200RPM.
97ft/lb(131NM)@4800RPM to 110ft/lb(148NM) 4800RPM.
All well and good, but the torque is moved waaaay high. We'd need some sort of progressive-dual clutch thing to not fry a thousand clutches offroading this engine.

4A-GZE. Super-charged 16valve 4A-GE. 145-170HP(108-127KW)@???? 140-155ft/lb(190-210NM)@??????

4A-GE. Jap-Spec 20v inline 4. 160-165HP(123-127KW)@7800RPM. 120ft/lb(162NM)@5600RPM.
Very powerful. Keep in mind these are Naturally aspirated (no Turbo, Superm or Nitro.) They also have individual throttle bodies for each cylinder. With an open intake runner.... Holy shit this setup will make your spine tingle at higher RPMs... Nothing beats that sound when coupled to a Race-exhaust (not that cheesy, crappy rice garbage)

5A. 1.5L (1498cc) Carbed inline 4. 16v DOHC. 85HP(63KW)@6000RPMs. 90ft/lb(122NM)@3600RPMs.
Not bad... I think I saw a conversion for one of these somewhere on here?

5A-FE. Fuel Injected 5A. 2 generations.
1st Gen. 104HP(78KW)@6000RPM. 97ft/lb (131NM)@4800RPMs.
2nd Gen. 100HP(75KW)@5600RPM. 102ft/lb(138NM)@4400RPMs.
Pretty impressive setup. I think these get good mileage as well.

6A. 1.4L. (1397cc) displacement.
16v DOHC.
82HP(61KW)@????RPM . 87ft/lb(117NM)@????RPM.
It didn't say anything about carbed or EFI. Or RPM's. Must not be a popular engine?

7A. Largest "A" at a whopping 1.8L (1762cc) displacement.
First to break away from the 77mm stroke for an 85.5mm stroke.
115HP(86KW)@5600RPM. 110-115ft/lb(149-155NM)@2800RPM.
Thats some nice torque.
Apparently its very very easy to take a 7A bottom and toss a 4A-GE or GZE head on it to romp torque and HP. I wonder if the 20v head would mount up. That just might make for a sexy beast. Of course custom pistons would be needed to make notches for the 5 versus 4 valves.

Thats what I could grab off Wikipedia.

Because they're freeks, that's why!

Also, be aware that the Terc's 4WD box has a hard torque ceiling of around 100ft/lbs. Any more than that and it'll kabom and you'll be out one rather hard-to-find drivetrain.

what would be the cheapest and most reliable to drop in of all those motors, i liked the low tq of the 7a but i dont wana blow tranny. if its to powerfull its not reliable. i dont wana dump thousands into this thing, i do that in my mustang. but i do work in a shop and can get motors for just about any car deliverd in a few days for good prices. so what does the 4afe , 5a, and 7a come out of?

The 5A is only available overseas I think.
The 7A? Can't remember... Corolla maybe?
4AFE is a Corolla engine. I'd try and find a 4A-F though. If the limit is 100, better to be 2 under than 2 over, yes?

The most reliable and cheap to grab would be the 4A-C. Its not massively more powerful, but you would see a 30% increase in HP and at least 15% increase in torque, without stripping the drivetrain.
They are available in Corollas. The only RWD version being the AE86 SR5 platform.
There is a slight aftermarket for the 4A-C (which is really just a bored 3A-C) including valvetrain componants and bearings. The best part is that the pistons and maybe the con rods are swappable with the 4A-GE. In other words, you could have the potential for some light turbo'ing, we're talking 4PSI boost, not 8. That might hike her up to 90HP. Maybe even 100.

well theres a guy at my work with a corral maybe 92 i think it has the 4afe in it, not for sure though. i think it has motor propblems, but has everything else required for swap. if you see where im going with this. i think he would let it go for cheap, his kid blew it up after putting anew motor in it. ok enough rambeling about fuel injection

what power would a 4ac swap with like new valvesprings and clean up the ports on head and intake and top it with a weber? cause simple is what makes this lil car rock

Check out Paradise Racing. They sell a kit with the valvetrain and weber for the 4A-C.
I'd guess 90HP Naturally aspirated? Good fuel economy as well if you drive it gently.

Paradise Racing also has the Paradise Racing Power Pack for the Toyota 4AC and Toyota 2/3TC engines!!! It includes a Weber 32/36 Carb Kit, Schneider Cam & Dual Valve Springs. It will provide a Dyno Proven 40hp and an improved power band up to 8,000 rpms!!! $649

Okay, so 110 horses or so.

Corolla's from the mid-late 80's. The one from the Corolla GTS AE86 SR5 RWD would fit most easily. All the rest are transverse (side-side, not length-wise) But can be made to fit.

Just do a search for 4A-C on google. It should tell you.
