Looking for a transmission for my 85.
Are there directions on this board for testing a transmission at a wrecking yard?

sign of trans health is to pull the input shaft and see how sharp the teeth are, and how worn down the bearing journal is. if the teeth are thin and sharp, or the journal is severely worn, it was ran low on oiltercle wrote: Sun Feb 02, 2025 12:06 pm Looking for a transmission for my 85.

I hope to swap in the transmission only, as it is easier to wrestle it with the car just lifted on ramps and stands without the bell housing and differential attached.
But I can still pull the input shaft assy first and check that.
Removing transmission only

I'm a bit interested in your old transmission... I just got a 83 without one. Just a bit worried about shipping to Colorado? I have 3 tercels a the local junkyard, all without transmissions....
To the moon and back!

Re: Looking for a 85-88 4WD Transmission
As I understand it, a 85 transmission won't work in a 83 4wd wagon.
The gear ratio is different.
That's why I specified only 85-88 to fix my car.

If you're planning on separating the diff from the transmission, than any year of 4wd Tercel wagon transmission will work. This is because the gear ratio is determined in the differential. I had to do the same as you, and swapped an 83 trans onto an 87 diff in my current car a few years ago.tercle wrote: Fri Feb 14, 2025 11:04 pm As I understand it, a 85 transmission won't work in a 83 4wd wagon.

Just my 2 cents but if I were you and able to find a good 4.1 gearing trans (that's the 85-88 one) I would swap the entire transmission + diff. I think that putting them back together in the car and trying to make sure they are sealed together so it won't leak gear oil would be difficult, and if it leaks you would have to do it all over again. I've removed and replaced transmissions from these cars a number of times and find it's actually not too bad a job. But like I said, that's just my 2 cents, I understand if you have reasons you want to go a different route.

Ohhh!
Ha! Shows how much I know about transmissions!
I injured myself pretty bad the last time I pulled the whole transmission just to do a clutch job.
I have to save my body for other things planned this year.
The only way I thought I could do it was pulling the section behind the transaxle, but now I know that's ill-advised.
Sorry. If I can't do it, I can't ship the messed-up trans to Colorado.
