It is a 3A engine. Im still looking for a 4A to put in it. Havent sourced one i want to use yet. Might have another 3A if a guy i helped will replace his engine. He had low compression on one cylinder. Either a burnt exhaust valve due to a leaky intake or headgasket. Either way fixable issues. Then i might have a engine i can play with.

That's interesting considering I have a parts catalog claiming they have 3A-C engines. 🤔

I have a couple of Sweden manuals and they state too that Swedish cars had 3A-C engines. The engine label says usually 3A but the cars have usually catalytic converter and extra emission stuff on at least later Swedish Tercels. Swiss Tercels should have additional emission equipment too.

But interesting part is that at least Swedish Tercels have point ignition with catalytic converter. So they are kind of unique in that way.

Mine doesnt have any catalytic converter but it does have points ignition. I would have prefered the electric ignition over the points one ive had some issues getting it to work as good as i wanted. Im planning on doing some servicing to the car this week. Valve stem seals and a wheel bearing is a part of it. My tank is leaking aswell so im going to take it down for a third time to go over it.

My '81 1st generation Tercel originally had a points-type distributor. I replaced it with an electronic distributor from the 2nd gen Tercels. It fits perfectly. The only thing to modify is the wiring, since the points-type system is 6 volt. There is a big resistor in the engine bay to drop the battery voltage to 6v and you have to bypass this to get the 12v from the battery to the new electronic distributor.

I have provided instructions of the IIA distributor upgrade now at following topic: viewtopic.php?t=16306

My instructions require a IIA distributor from 1983-1987 E8 Corolla 4A engine.

And Marks instructions you can apply if you find older system that is used in 1st gen. L10-Tercels for example.

And I have attached exhaust pipe spare part picture that is straight from Toyotas spare part catalog that shows catalytic converters in European Tercels: https://www.megazip.net/zapchasti-dlya- ... e-17940063#

It says that European spec. 3AC engines manufactured after May 1986 have catalytic converters. So we are talking about 1987 & 1988 model year Tercel 4wd's basically. Finnish Tercels had still 3A's in 1987. So we had no converters, ECRs etc. I know this because I own two Finnish spec. 1987 Tercel 4wd's.

I have also attached a picture of Swedish 3AC system description straight from Swedish manual. You have a 1986 Tercel? Do you still have ECR valves and rest of stuff shown in that figure?

I dont recognize the HIC valve mentioned in the picture. I cant remember seeing it on the engine. im going to prob check the carb and drill the holes slightly bigger to juice the car just slightly. the weak engine of the tercel is annoying lol. i have a corolla 4wd 1988 with 105 hp and it runs so much nicer!
