Transaxle install after transmission fix

Post by mhebb1 »

Hope this thing works after all the work getting it out and rebuilt. This is the poor mans lift out in the yard. In Vermont I have a LOT of tercel parts *85.86 if anyone is close enough to come get them. (S Straffrord).

I agree with SirFoxx. I'm sure it was nice to not have to crawl under the car but this approach seems like it would have its own challenges.

What was wrong with the transmission?

Wow... I was shocked when I saw those pics. But this forum could use a jolt, so thanks for providing one. If it works, it's called innovation. If not, well... lesson learned.

No damage to tercel. Just lay out 8 or so tires for it to rest on, Transmission was missing 5th gear. Teeth turned out to be stripped. Support under hubs and door post where the body strength is. I drained the gas first. A lot easier to work on vs a lift where everything is over your head. I have a few spare transmissions to scavenge. And hoards of other parts.

These cars have no frame so the body is like an eggshell and has good strength if spread out.I don't see an option to add more pictures to show there was no damage to body. Should I start a new topic?

No need for a new topic, you're good here!

For adding more photos: below the white box, just click on 'Full Editor & Preview.'

Then below the white box on the next screen, click on the Attachments tab, click 'Add files,' do that and then click 'place inline.'

ImageBelow see how the car was rolled over. Here it is tilted enough so I can get fluid into the transmission. Before I had the tractor I used a comealong (hand winch). No tires under it because it's not going all the way over. This was not ideal for installing the transaxel. I ended up setting a saw horse next to the car with boards running from it to the frame rails. This made a table on just the right level so no lifting was needed to slide the beast into the engine. It was necessary to tilt the engine down towards the back to get the input shaft to enter the clutch. In the other picture I'm piping gear oil into the transmission. The body shows no damage from being previously rolled on it's side. (Not the first time either)
