Mechanically the engine is okay (well, not really. theres a bunch of slop in the piston-to-cylinder due to the machine shop fucking up the bore -- not enough to cause piston slap, but more than there should be). I am still leaning towards this being an ecu issue, or a coil pack issue.

No, I dont have a spare 4age head. Compresssion is great across all 4 cylinders, so i highly doubt theres a head / block problem.
Ok, I see. Could you transfer this misfire into another cylinder by swapping parts in both injection + ignition? Theoretically that should be possible.

ive already played the musical parts game, and the misfire remains. like i said, i cannot track what cylinder the misfire is on so i cannot see if moving parts causes the misfire to move.

Oh, I see. Then maybe you could get some help from AE86 or MR2 forums. I think that these guys especially AE86 guys should know injection + 4AGE pretty well.

Well, good news. I choked down the price of new, quality hitachi coil packs, and i think that fixed my misfire. I've been driving it the last few days with the old packs, and once it warmed up the engine would not misfire. However, with the hitachi coils, there are no more misfires, even when dead cold! I will continue to drive it, see how she does.

Next steps for the car will be adding a catch can, and modifying the valve covers for larger breathers. The factory breather is waaaaaay too tiny for the engine, especially when there is blow by. Also still need to get an air filter for it...

Good job! I am glad that you managed to tackle the misfire.

Adding a catch can sounds a lot nicer job than searching a misfire. So hopefully that will be easier task to complete.
