SR5 Hatch Handle Wing Knob Removal

Post by theaterrat »

Hello All. I have a 1983 SR5 Hatchback. The lock on the back has been a bit of a problem for a while and it finally gave out and won't turn anymore. I think one of the tumblers broke off. Anyway, I have some spare lock cylinders lying around, that are the same size. So I figured I'd just swap them out. The only problem is I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove the wing knob/handle from the broken lock cylinder. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

theaterat,

I’ve always assumed those were “single piece” handles and they would be swapped as a unit. However, I’ve never tried and can’t confirm.

Not what I was hoping, but good to know. I guess I'll go on the hunt for a replacement handle then. Thanks for the help!

I might have one, I’ll check the parts car pile this weekend. And, I could be wrong. If yours is broken, there’s not much to lose in trying.

I wonder if a skilled locksmith can swap contents of a lock cylinder to another handle wing knob?

I have understood that a skilled lock smith can remake or replace contents of a worn out lock cylinder.

I don’t remember if I removed it or ?? It does look like they might “pop” off, I’m not sure what keeps the plastic wings on.
