Turbo 4age tercel

Post by SirFoxx »

I'm just posting this for now as a teaser. Still have a lot of work to do, and I'm not great at documenting my work. I've had a few people inquire about it so here are a few pictures.

Very interesting project. It will be very quick since that chassis does not weigh much.

I see also that you have manufactured exhaust manifold for that. Do you need to modify fuel tank and lines for that modification? I have understood that 4AGE has fuel pump inside tank normally.

The exhaust is a diy job. There's a fellow that makes them for mr2's since they suffer similar space constraints. I wish the flange was angled a bit lower, but I'll take what I can get.

As for the fuel pump, depends. I have a 7age that runs off 60psi using an external pump and the original 5/16(?) steel line coming out of the sending unit, which then feeds 3/8" rubber to the tbi unit.

The turbo 4age is going to use a similar setup, but I have modified the sending unit to have 3/8" steel lines so there isn't a bottle neck in the fuel system.

If you 4age swap your t4wd, you can use an ae86 gts tank. It's the same, but it's setup for an in tank pump. However, you'll need to source the hangar and the fuel level unit.

Few more pics. Got the intercooler and radiator mounted. The pics don't show it well, but it's going to be a huge pain to make the piping and upper radiator line. I still need to figure out where to put the blow off valve as well.

The fan is a cheapo one my roommate had laying around. I'll probably want to run two of them, especially since my roommate wants to add a/c to the car once it's running.

And yes, the grill still fits with no issues :)

Nice work Keegan,

What purpose is the stock radiator going to serve? I see you’re working around it, but understand the large AL radiator will cool the engine? Piping/hoses will be interesting. Do you expect this set up to have some of the same “heat” challenges (exhaust heat melting wires, etc.) as your 7age? Did you add some sheilds? Or route differently? Keep up the great work.

The first gens radiators are a lot thicker than the 2nd gen radiators. When i had it in my 7age tercel, the engine struggled to get past 170*F. Wasnt a thermostat issue...all i could chalk it up to was the hood scoop was helping cool the motor while I was driving. If the stock radiator (which is a NOS one I picked up about 2 years ago) cant handle the extra heat, Ill look into the civic radiator.

Heat challenges, the only one I can think of is the clutch cable since it will be routed right next to all the exhaust.

4AGE fits really well into 1-gen Tercel according to your pictures. I see also that you have already planned many details like exhaust and fuel tank so I am sure that you will get car going well. Please keep on posting updates here so we can follow this interesting build also in the future.

Another update. Figured out how to do the IC plumbing. Turbo-to-IC was easy, IC-to-TB was the fun part. I ended up making a 45* piece out of steel exhaust tubing, and very carefully cut another 45* silicone coupler to twist it up to the TB.

I cut a hole in the IC as well for the blow off valve. A buddy of mine will be welding the mount to the IC. I made sure to connect my shopvac to the IC to give it the big SUCCC to make sure no metal shavings made it into the IC lol.

Next step will be buying a 3-port solenoid for boost control.

Yes, good job! It seems that you need still distributor and water lines to radiator and then you might be already really close to start that engine for the first time.

Im still working on the entire wiring harness for the engine, as well as the ECU -- im using a DIY version of the megasquirt ECU.

Waterlines are next. I am reusing the lower tercel hose, gotta figure something out for the upper.

I am not using a dizzy. I will be using coil on plug coil packs from a 1NZ engine found in a yaris.

not much of an update, but got the IC plumbing finalized and the BOV installed. Not shown is the radiator installed. I had to massage each side of the radiator with a flap disc so the IC plumbing would fit and not rub against the radiator.

The car may be put on a short term back burner soon -- i am looking at selling my '15 hyundai, and if i do so, I have a rusty 300sd mercedes I need to get up to snuff before winter hits. I have other cars that run fine I could use, but I'd rather not drive them on the salty roads.

You are really updating this engine technically if you are doing coil on plug ignition instead of distributor and doing full proper engine wiring harness.

And yes, it makes sense to do winter drivers first. My Tercels are similarly used during summertime so no need to get them running for wintertime. You will also have a lot less worries of rust by driving Tercels during summer if they salt your roads also.

Occasional pauses on car projects allow brainwork , which can easier challenges in projects. It provides also more time to find critical parts for project. So small pauses can be positive.

Thanks! I just sent the computer off to a buddy to have it tested. If all checks out with it, I can move onto setting up the wiring loom for the engine. I bought both looms for the megasquirt ecu, so itll just be a matter of connecting all the pigtails to the corresponding wires.

I am thinking itll be at least kinda running in the spring. Too many holidays coming up, and the mercedes I'm working on is absolutely kicking my ass x_x
