ISO Tercel 4WD In Or Around Utah
Hey everyone,
I am new to the forum. I have always wanted a Tercel and I am now in a position where I am able to have one. I first saw them when I would go to Alaska and work for the summers to pay for my undergrad. The body style is what caught my eye then I learned they are 4WD and I was sold.
Anyway to the point, I really want to find one near me, which is Utah and the surrounding states. Please let me know if you have one or know of any within the area. I am not looking for a showcase car but I am looking for one that does drive with minor work needed. By no means am I the greatest mechanic but I for sure am learning.
Thanks everyone.

welcome to the forum!
they are popular in the mountain states, but you may have to travel a bit to find a good one. I have gone across several states to rescue one (I have done that perhaps 6 or 7 times). I get it running and drove it across the country back home. than fixed it up and sold it as a good daily driver. if you can find one with a decent body, mechanical repairs are fairly easy and usually not too costly as far as parts.
You can find good examples in Idaho, Montana, Washington and Oregon, sometimes around Reno NV, Colorado, and California. search the craigs lists in those areas, and be prepared to fly out and drive it back. take a tool kit, and a few spares to make sure you get it home. I have also bought tires for them, and replaced fluids and filters before I hit the road back home if I was worried about the condition of the tires. they are fun adventures along the way anyway, most important issue is the condition of the engine, and transmission/clutch. those are difficult to fix if you blow it on the hwy. most other things can be fixed by the road side if you have the parts.

Re: ISO Tercel 4WD In Or Around Utah
Thanks Petros. That is good info and good ideas. I am talking to an guy in Mesa that has one in really great shape. Sounds like he has done a lot of work on it. The issue is he is an older gentleman and does not use cell phones. I am trying to get more pictures from him before I pick it up.
Do you guys have any suggestions about questions I should ask?
Here is a picture of it.

I wouild ask how long ago the clutch was changed, if well under 100k you should be good to go on it.
and either crawl under and remove the trans/diff gear oil filler plug and check the level of the gear lube in the transmission, or take it to a local shop and pay them to top it up. it is critically important that it have the correct amount of gear lube in it. even low it can end up trashing the gear box on the drive home.
