A little bit ago I was given an original radio, thanks again Jimcrazy!
The actual radio portion works great, however the tape deck below it has a problem.
When a tape is inserted it automatically tries to fast forward the tape and will not reverse or play.
Anyone have any general suggestions before I tear the tape deck apart?

Re: Help with original radio
I'm not sure what year this radio is from as I've seen different radios in these wagons.
I'm pretty sure what's going on with the tape deck is it's getting stuck in auto reverse, but I could be wrong.

Re: Help with original radio
I wish that I had a useful suggestion. Auto-reverse tape players of all kinds, from that era, usually soon developed operational problems of some kind - sometimes mechanical, sometimes electronic. I never had much luck getting them to work properly, again.
Here are some things that I might try (on my own player):
- 1. Blow compressed air into the tape slot and around the buttons.
2. Put an old tape in and eject it several times, repeatedly.
3. Use an old tape and press all of the buttons, in turn, to determine if they are responsive.
Opening the tape player is likely the best way see what is happening inside.
Best wishes for getting it figured out.
As a side note: The 1985 Tercel SR5, like mine, had an optional tape player that slid in under the AM/FM radio, which had the needed connector on the back. I never got the tape player, though, because tapes were being replaced by CDs.
No other vehicle that I have ever owned had a heart and soul like my 1985 Tercel SR5 4WD Wagon.

I'm not entirely sure if the connector for the tape deck can be used for AUX or not, but I'll double check the pin-out!
