Looking for a Steering U-Joint (knuckle)

Post by jimijuma »

Steering is binding. It is the u-joint. Been on the hunt. Will one from an 80s MR2 work? Looks pretty darn similar. Anyone have one lying around they could part with?

Saw your thread. Thanks. Looks like I will order that u-joint repair kit, part number 19-1010. That kit is for sale everywhere.

I also spotted this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NO4NJHU/re ... IEbBW26NNE

Thoughts on that? Says it will work on a 85-88 Tercel.

hard to say if it will work,,the power steering one and the manual steering are different but if its cheap enough may be worth a try

it will not work on the early Tercels, '83-84. the configuration is different, early ones has a spline shaft at one end. it is not that difficult to replace just the u-joint. you can buy just the u-joint and install it. I did a thread on how to replace it.

Here is the instructions: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=9448&p=68623&hilit= ... int#p68623

Here is the part number for the replacement u-joint (about $20 a few years ago): viewtopic.php?f=16&t=10918

if you soak your binding u-joints in motor oil it will hold up a bit longer. eventually it will fall apart, so make sure you get it replaced asap.

When I first got my Tercel I had an issue with the steering joint stiffening up mid-corner. Sprayed it with either WD-40 or PB Blaster once, maybe 4 years ago, and have never given it a second thought. The oil took care of the binding in the joint.

Spend a few cents to see if it just needs some lube before you really tear into it.

I am happy to report that the part I spotted on amazon is a perfect fit. Here is the link again:

As Petro's stated, it will not work on the earlier Tercels. But if you have an '85-'88 T, an amazon account, $32.88, and about 15 mins, your steering can be smooth as silk.
