Engine rear end plate with just one bolt?

Post by Dumindu »

My car is a Toyota Tercel 1987 DX Wagon.

When I disassemble the engine, one out of two 5mm bolts that connect the rear end plate to the engine block, was broken. Broken portion was 2mm deep inside the cavity. I pierced the broken part with a 3mm drill bit and inserted a screw extractor to remove it. Extractor was also broken.

It is a steel one and now difficult to drill it.

If I use just a one bolt to connect the rear end plate to the block, would that be ok?

Is that the metal plate that gets clamped between the block and bell housing? it will not make any difference, do not worry about it.

the four large bell housing bolts, and the several other starter, etc bolts will hold it in place. they are only there to facilitate assembly, so the plate does not fall out of place or get misaligned during engine installation. Just pay attention this plate when you bring the engine and trans/bellhousing together, once you have several bolts in place, it will be locked into place and you can forget about it.
