SR5 vs 2wd Part Compatibility

Post by DerbyStar »

Does anyone know if parts like side mirrors and driver/passenger seats from same year Tercel’s are compatible? For example; I drive a 2wd ‘84, and an ‘84 SR5 about 50 miles from me is being parted out. I need a few parts but I need to make sure they will work. Has anyone come across this and have any insight? Thanks!!!

Side mirrors swap over but I think the mounting points for the seats is different because the floor pan for the 4wd has to accommodate the rear drive shaft. You could probably make it work though, others have swapped weird seats into T4's before, it just requires some modifications.

I would imagine that the front seats would swap over fine. Rears, prolly. Can't imagine that they would have used different seats for fwd and rwd.

I tried swapping in a front seat from an 87(?) corolla into my '85 t4wd. Had to completely hack up the mounts to make it work. Definitely would not recommend haha.

Not sure about the front seats, but the rears will def. NOT swap over. FWD rear bottom cushions are hinged to fold forward allowing the back rests to fold level with the cargo area.
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

the FWD wagon has the fuel tank under the rear seat, the floor pan and seat mount on the FWD wagon is completely different configuration. they will not interchange. as I recall, so are the seat backs, but I am not so sure.

the FWD seats are vinyl, not worth getting. With the exception of the '88 model year, they have a decent fabric covering. I do not recall if the front mounts were different or not.

I parted out a FWD wagon, and got a lot of parts off of it. fenders and hood is the same, as is the engine bay components. Interior parts are generally not as good as the SR5 interior, but many can be interchanged.

Thanks for the help everyone, I thoroughly appreciate all of the input. It seems that the juice may not be worth the squeeze on this one. The dang vinyl is tearing and looks unsightly. But that’s the Terc life, worn and rugged! 🤣

Take heart- Not ALL of the FWD seats are vinyl- my original '87 has real nice cloth ones. Far as I know, ALL Tercel wagons produced in 1988 were SR5S. Anyone here that here that knows otherwise, feel free to correct me. BTW- I can hook you up with outside rear view mirrors.
