Rear Lower Control Arm Same?

Post by DanT »

I need to replace a rear lower control arm on my 83 T4 SR5. I am searching salvage yards on the East Coast. Some internet information suggests that this part must come off of an 83 or an 84, Toyota part number 48720 16040. I am aware that the T4 rear end is the same as the Corolla, so I am guessing an 83 or 84 Corolla would work also.

Is anyone able to verify whether the rear lower control arms for all years of T4's are the same?

It is my understanding that this part will fit on either the right side or the left side, and Is interchangeable.

Any further information on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan

all of the Tercel4wd rear axle links are the same, all years are interchangeable. Not sure if the RWD corolla are the same, likely they are because the axle is the same, but the front mount could be differnt.

BTW they usually called trailing arms (not control arms).

Very helpful to know that the trailing arms are the same for all years. That could make it much easier for me to find one. Thanks for the help. Much appreciated!

I have a 1984 T4wd daily driver, and an '85 project 4age swap T4wd in my garage. If I remember I will take a peak at the rear trailing arms on both to see if there is a difference.

it is possible they changed the design of the arm, but the fit and function is identical, and they can be interchanged. but I can not see them changing the body pan (where the forward end mounts) nor the axle mount and location, so I do not know how it would matter. possible they switched to another supplier, used different brand of bushings, etc. so they have different part numbers, but they can be swapped out.

48720 16040 is the discontinued Toyota parts number for 1983–84 showing in the online Toyota diagrams. 48720 16030 is the discontinued part number for newer models. I agree with you that the attachment points on both ends are likely identical. Not sure why they changed the part numbers. If you could take a look that would be helpful to know if you can discern any difference. Thanks, Dan

Could be anything, new supplier for the paint, a change in the manufacturing process. The part number changes because releasing two different, yet similar parts under the same part number can lead to problems identifying suspect parts if there is a defect discovered, so they supersede to a new number.

I did a quick look under my '84 T4wd, and my '85 T4wd, both the trailing links look the same, visually anyway. I did not measure them.

Thanks for checking. Yes, that agrees with what I am finding out here also. Any 83-87 T4 wagon should fit. Apparently Corolla trailing arms will not fit our T4 wagons. I have put hours in calling salvage yards in my area (Northeast and East Coast to Baltimore). Unable to get this part around here. If anyone on this list has a trailing arm to sell please pm me. Will pay $35 (common salvage yard rate?) plus shipping. (I will PayPal or pay in advance so no risk for you.) Dan
