Harmonic Balancer

Post by grouchytom »

When crank is on the crank timing mark the timing mark for the timing cover is approximately at 8oclock as viewed from the front of the motor. Could I have a bad balancer?

The pulley could have separated. Its held in place with rubber by, probably what is called vulcanized.

Tom,

What “crank” timing mark are you using besides the harmonic balancer?

I was thinking he might have the top belt cover off and was looking at lower crank belt pulley mark.

the only way to know for sure is to take out the number one spark plug and visually get the piston to TDC using a flash light to look into the spark plug hole. You can see when the piston is exactly at TDC. than check the mark on the front blancer compared to the timing indicator. it should be at "O" when the piston is at the top of its travel.

if it is anywhere other than zero, the blanacer has to come off for inspection. several issues can cause this, a damaged or shear off key in the front pulley key-way, or a de-laminated harmonic balancer.

believe its a de-lamintated harmonic balancer. Have timing cover off and belt disconected using the crank mark and mark on the block. puts it at #1 TDC Timing mark on balancer is at about 8o'clock instead of 1o'clock which would be 0.

sounds like you need a new front pulley/balancer. That happens sometimes, oil weakens the bond as it ages, eventually it gives up.

there are places that can rebuild the old one, but finding a good used one is likely less expensive.
