Leaky front end

Post by Ellisdee »

Ive replaced the seals on my front axles, the end that goes into the transmission twice, it still leaks...the seals did not seem tight enough on the axles when I put them on before assembly to check got fit...I know I used the right ones...has anyone else had this problem?

I did just previously. I made the mistake of driving the seal in as far as it could go and that was the wrong answer. I couldn't give you an exact distance per say, but the seal only sits in a certain amount.

According to the repair manual, the seal needs to be driven in 8.4-9.0 mm (0.331-0.354 inches) from the surface of the case.

I have consistently had problems at getting these seals in at exactly the correct depth, and had to remove the CV's and reset them a few times. It super sucks. I think it's a lousy design that there isn't some sort of lip in there for the seals to butt up against because measuring the depth all the way around the seated seal is difficult to do accurately, especially when you're lying on your back in the dirt with not much room to work.

Sorry for the rant. To answer your question, if your new seals are leaking Ellisdee, you may want to recheck the depth and adjust them to the spec Yaut mentioned. If you deform them at all you will need to replace them though.

Hey Yaut,

What page did you find this info on? I've looked through the FSM and page FA-18, but didn't find anything specific to seal renewal. Driving the outside of the oil seal 0.3" past the surface of the case sounds deeper than I would expect, but I don't recall for certain. Is it possibly referencing the actual "lip" of the seal vs the outside face of the seal? I've renewed the drivers side seal on my Tercel and just don't remember driving it that far home.

Elisdee,

Do your new seals look like the Beck/Arnley #0523521?

That's the right seal. Member xirdneh made a sweet little tool for this out of PVC. Hopefully he sees this and can maybe post a picture. I just replaced my passenger side axle on my DD and got lucky carefully tapping it in with a large socket (28mm I think).

From an old post of Tom's:
ARCHINSTL wrote: Thu Apr 21, 2011 12:43 pm It's NEEDLESSLY (!) buried in the Differential section of the MT info - look on MT-86, item 15. There is a drawing with dimensions.
In metric, the CV axle seal depth is supposed to be 8.4-9 mm.

Thanks dlb (and Tom!),

It does look like, with the proper tool (or something similar) the tool will hit the “stop” when the proper depth is acheived. I need to look up xirdeh’s homemade tool as it would certainly be handy on this job. It looks like a piece of pipe with the OD to match the housing and an ID small enough to catch the new seal is all that would be needed.

NWMO,

The info I found was on MT-86, step 15 of the manual. It looks like Toyota had a special tool "SST 09223-46012" to install it the the correct depth. It's hard to tell from the picture but it looks like it's from the outside face of the seal from the surface of carrier. I'm going to feel really stupid if I'm looking at the wrong thing.

Edit: NWMO, I didn't see your previous post until I posted this.

Thanks for the info, I’ve ordered two new seals and believe I can fabricate a tool out of pvc pipe...I’ll be so glad to be able to park anywhere without leaving a puddle.

I decided rather than make a tool out of pvc...it would be so much easier to turn a wooden one on my lathe...I’ve done this previously to make a clutch alignment tool...I’ll post pics when I get it done.

If anyone is interested in making a batch of seal driving tools, I'd be willing to purchase one. I repalced my seal twice and have had continual leaks. I feel like I am definitely driving it in deeper than .3 inches.

Installing seal too deep seems to increase chance of leaking. I wish i knew why that is? .3" seems to work best.
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.
