Indian UTV Willies Jeep Clones?

Post by LowBuckCanuck »

Mildly interesting, I saw a Mahindra Roxor at a Calgary powersports dealer the other day.

Apparently, these Indian built, Willys Jeep clones, powered by an old international harvester diesel engine, are now being sold in North America as a non-street legal UTV.

Pretty cheap, and in stock at several St. Louis dealers, so I presume available all over North America?

I presume "off-road only" because of no safety features, etc.?
In looking at its passenger vehicles, most look like Jeep knockoffs.

From Motor Trend last year:

The Roxor has 62HP (sound familiar?) and weighs just over 3000 pounds.

That deisel has a lot of torque, for low speeds it should pull well. Max speed is 45mph?

That 3000 lb is max gross weight, not empty weight. Still seems a bit heavy.

I fell in love with the old military jeep of WW2 when I was about 5 years old. I was obsessed with them, I could not wait until I was old enough to drive so i could to buy one. Of course by the time I could drive I loved long road trips, so a ragtop jeep as out. I have since owned many 4x4 vehicles, but I have not owned one, i now see no reason to buy a jeep. So this jeep clone just leave me with, meh why? I

think our 35 year old tercel4wd is more useful, practical and more comfortable. Likely a more quiet ride too!

I imagine in some states you could street legalize one of these, apparently the top speed is electronically limited. Thats the biggest appeal of them I think. They're over 20 grand CAD, so they aren't very competitive in the UTV market.

I'll stick with a tercel, and if the rock crawler bug hits me, I'll buy a Suzuki Samurai.

I watched a video comparison of the Mahindra vs. a real Willies, and offroad, the Willys killed this thing. The Mahindra doesn't have the suspension flex the original does, and it's a heck of a lot heavier as well.

They're built under license, so they're not really clones or knockoffs at all.

All jeeps should be speed limited. I always laugh when someone complains their lifted big tire tar baby wrangler has poor highway manners.

All I've read is that some parts are compatible with CJs and vice versa, I'm not very well versed in jeep code.

I doubt any parts are interchangeable, but Mahindra claims they have agreements starting in the 1940's and as recently as 2009, to build these.
