Doesn't being a Tercel trans make "jdm" impossible? Not a bad price though if "average mileage is 60k" applies or even if it just works good as they keep getting rarer every day. I can understand needing plugs, but if those cut axles were low mileage, dumb!

Sprinter Carib over there. I imagine the whole doner car would have been in good nick. not just the axles!splatterdog wrote: ↑Wed Jan 02, 2019 4:38 pm Doesn't being a Tercel trans make "jdm" impossible? Yea, not sure about the whole "We'll just assume 60k" but I figured any tranny is worth nabbing at this point. Speaking of...the 83 SR5 parts car in the yard I go to still has the tranny...305k on the dash. The car wasn't wrecked and the yard doesn't know why it was sent there. Any way to tell if the tranny is worth pulling without actually pulling it?

Re: Transmission on Ebay - $450 in Georgia
pulling the trans is not that big of a job if you are not saving the small parts to reinstall, I pulled a trans in 48 min from a self servcie wrecking yard when it was already up on jacks.Abletobecain wrote: ↑Thu Jan 03, 2019 8:30 pm ...the 83 SR5 parts car in the yard I go to still has the tranny...305k on the dash. there is hand test I do once it out of the car, may work while it is still in the car, but you will need an assistant, or you will have to crawl back under in each gear.
I rotate the input shaft and shift thorugh each gear, full rotation or more on the output shaft. while in the car you can do this with the drive shaft by putting it in 4wd. put it in first, rotate the trans though at least one full revolution and feel the output shafts (it can be done with the cv axles in place). than put it in second, repeat, than third, fourth, fifth and so fourth. It should rotate smoothly though the full revolution in each gear, and it should shift into each gear. Usually that will tell you if all gears are good, and you can feel bad bearings this way too. it does not check for syncro wear, and you likely should replace the seals too. Also, with the plugs out of the bottom you can look up into the gear cluster with a flash light and inspect them as you rotate it around.
Not a complete test, but it will let you know if it is trashed or not.
when a car that is not wrecked is in the yard likely it will have a repair that a shop told them was not worth doing. could be engine or could be transmission. most of the time I have found it is usually a blown head gasket (which is actually a fairly easy fix compared to most modern cars), I pulled one trans once from a yard and found the clutch had lost a piece of metal and it was rattling around in the bellhousing (lots of metal nicks inside). must have sounded bad, and a repair shop did not bother to pull the trans to check, likely told them a rebuilt trans was going to cost $3000, so it ended up in the wrecking yard. All it needed was a new clutch, what a shame, it was in decent condition too. I took the whole interior, much of the trim, and the trans and rear diff off of it.

Sounds like I need to find an assistant! The yard I go to pulls all the wheels and sets the cars on the ground...pretty annoying. I think It'll be a while before I'm ready to pull the trans out of it.
Yea, this car is not wrecked but it's pretty well gutted now. At the rate I'm buying parts off of it though, I should have just asked to buy the whole thing. Hah.

Re: Transmission on Ebay - $450 in Georgia
you can do the different gear tests alone, but you have to crawl out from under the car, shift the lever, and go back under it. An assistant shifting the gears for you would save a lot of grunting.
if they set the car on the ground, how would you get the trans out of it? do they let you bring jacks, jack stands, etc. so you can get under it?

I could get them to forklift it up and set it on one of the racks that they have. I asked them last time I was there and they said they would. I also asked if I could buy the whole car for $200 and they said sure but I'd have to take it with me but I don't have any room for it.
