1983 Tercel 4WD wagon for sale. Louisiana
Re: 1983 Tercel 4WD wagon for sale. Louisiana
The front oil seal leak is a chronic problem on this model and easy to fix. I use a breaker bar with the right size socket on the front pulley bolt, wedge the breaker bar handle in the frame and hit the starter momentarily. The bolt comes off easy. An impact wrench also works.
Remove the pulley and harmonic balancer, then the timing belt and lower timing gear. Then just pick out the seal with a hook tool. Do NOT use the instructions for this seal from the FSM, too much work and an increased risk of damaging the new seal. Carefully install a new seal and while your at it, a new timing belt and tensioner.

Also from the preceding: "I forgot one item on doing the belt replacement: xirdneh had no luck using his impact wrench on the crank bolt - he went in with the extension and flex joint over the bumper - I went in with my impact wrench and the extension and flex joint under the bumper, and the angle was much less acute and the bolt popped right off."
