the drive shaft u-joints are replaceable.use a neapco 1-0430 or a rockford 430-10,direct fit no mods required, check the center of your steady bearing i have had the center bearing holder separate from the rubber, will give you play

the carrier bearings is actually mounted in big squishy rubber mount, usually it can be moved around by hand but it should not feel loose. if the bearing or the u-joints have play, they are bad, but the rubber mount should be pliable and flexible. unless it is clunking around when you accelerate in 4wd, or the rubber mount is shredded, I would not worry about it.

Little play or deflection ok. Maybe 1mm at the bearing. If the bearing has off spots of clunks it's toast. Carrier bearing rubber bushing should have no more than 7mm deflection up and down.
