replacement u-joint for steering shaft

Post by jimcrazy »

i found a nice little u-joint for the steering shaft, it has 16mm caps the right size and uses inside locks to retain it.just had to squeeze the yokes in about .03 to get the inside measurement of 1.05". got it from a bike shop it fits some 4 wheelers as a axle joint

excellent! I knew there had to be something close enough to work available. how much was it?

the size of u-joint on the steering shaft was also used on MR2, corollas and other models, and are still available, but they come with the yoke for the other models, which does not work on the Tercel of course.

i have found good ones in a wrecking yard and managed to get them out and install them in the Tercel yoke, but it is a lot of work and you risk damaging the bearings pressing it out.

I moved this to the Part Numbers Forum. Great find!
@ xirdneh: The name of the importer is Importations Thibault ltée

The part number in its catalog, 248191010:

The part number by application/mfgr (I could not find it, but it is listed - somewhere in these 8 pages):

I think that assembly works on the '85-88 Tercel wagon (with the tilt steering column). the '83-84 uses one with a spline shaft at one end of the connection, and is NLA. but the u-joint itself from this assembly will fit if you can remove it from the yoke without damaging it, and than install it into your '83-84 yoke.

It would cost less and be less trouble if you can just get a you joint like the one in the first picture. Are there any on-line retail sources for that u-joint?

super helpful post- it was a bit tough to press out the joint without ruining the cups so the best route is to get one of these new ones- I was even able to get the spring clips on! thanks @jimcrazy

A huge thanks to Jimcrazy and this forum for supplying parts sources for our beloved aging Tercels!
I had serious binding while steering and was thinking it was my steering rack. Pulled the steering shaft to find the U joint corroded and bound up. Ordered the new joint from Allballsracing, about $28 w/ shipping to Tacoma, WA. Even got the clips and zerk fitting in like Stefano said. Clips aren’t a perfect fit but I honestly think they will definitely hold considering the limited movement and tight fit of the joint. Works great, super smooth! Thanks again.
