Wiper come on when car is started

Post by xirdneh »

They come on when car is started when they are in off position. Ya cant get them to stop. They stop eventually but when turned back on they will not turn off.
Has anyone taken the thing apart?

if you unplug the wiper/turn signals/hazard controls on the underside of the steering column, does that stop the wipers?

if it does, I would just swap the controls out. while you're at it, you could upgrade to the controls with adjustable intermittent wipers. here's the post on that:

i did replace the assembly and that fixed it but that was my last unit
i have about four now that do not work for one reason or another
i would like to take them all apart and put at least one together from parts
was wondering if anyone has done that

I have taken them apart. they usually can be fixed with out any parts, the contacts get corroded and will often either stop continuity, or with a lot of corrosion, give a path of continuity. clean all the internal parts and add a small amount of lubricant, that usually solves the problem. Sometimes I have bent the contacts to improve contact, sometimes they hardly make contact because of wear.

I think these were actually designed to be "field serviced" for the parts of the world where you can can not always get spare parts. the housing comes apart with small screws, there are no solid state parts and no rivets, so access is easy.
