Mr. B,

Love your pics! I would NOT expect that small trailer to be a problem, but have three things you should consider:

1. Check how the hitch mounts to the sub-frame and bumper. Your car may be in good shape, but many bumpers (including mine) are swiss cheese.

2. I've not had an issue with the way I drive, but the brake system is considered to be relatively poor. If pulling a trailer, you would want to get the stock brakes up to snuff OR consider an upgrade (info available here on an MR2 upgrade I believe).

3. Again, I've not had a problem with temp, but down south, pulling a trailer, you may want to make sure your cooling system is also up to snuff. Overheating can create some real problems (reportedly) for these little engines.

Nice looking Tercel, welcome to the forum,

if your brakes need replacing anyway, do not waste money on factory brakes, they are too small, here is the thread on the brake up grade, highly recommended even if you are not towing:

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4998

check and verify you have a double row radiator (about 1.75 inches thick, single row is only about .75" thick core), many install the single row rad (from the 2wd hatch back version) rather than the more costly double row, which cools better and should be on the heavier 4wd wagon anyway (they are interchangeable, but one has about half the cooling capacity). Also, replace any suspect hoses, as well as install a new quality thermostat, get either a Japanese or US made T-stat. do not waste any money on communist made t-stats, they are junk, half are bad right out of the box, none last very long and you risk overheating and damaging the head gasket.

When you tow it be very gentle on the trans, they are generally durable, but they will not tolerate much abuse. Make sure you replace all of the trans seals while you have it out, they are all still available. Install quality normal Gear lube and perhaps no more than half synthetic gear lube like MTF (costly but more durable and lower drag), I would not run all synthetic gear lube because this trans was not designed for it, and full synthetic will make it act like they syncros are all gone.

Using the 4wd to back it down the ramp and pull it up will work fine as long as you are not doing any turns. the simple 4wd system is not AWD, there is no center diff so turn on paved roads will cause binding and high stress on the drivetrain. If you just back straight down the ramp, and and drive back up it in straight line, you will be fine. It may be the only way to get back up a wet ramp anyway, FWD will just spin the front wheels. Use the 4wd and extra low to pull it straight up and out, than shift it out of 4wd and EL (unless you are on a gravel surface).

good luck.
