How much to put in a new clutch for 83 Tercel 4wd?

Post by Chomsky43 »

I am NOT mechanically inclined so I would have to pay a mechanic to do this. Any idea what that would cost me?

"Book" time shows 5.5 hours for flywheel r&r plus machine shop time to resurface. Another 20-30 minutes for the rear main engine seal. Book time does NOT reflect rusted bolts or excessive cleanup.

usually a competent shop will do it for $450-600. if they want more, find another place. a lot depends on where you are located (big city, vs. small town, etc).. You might save a lot by getting a "home mechanic" who does side jobs in his garage. YOu have to ask around for those types, some are excellent and experienced mechanics, so ask around at the local auto parts stores and check craig's list for mechanics. check references to make sure they are reliable, lots of sloppy work done by even regular repair shops, so make sure they are responsible and have happy customers.

good luck

Hey Petros. Do you have any idea where I could find a rear transmission seal for an 83 SR5 and a front axle seal?

those seals are common to a lot of different cars, any auto parts store can order them for you. I get mine from Rockauto.com, cheap but watch shipping charges, usually worth it if you are buying other parts at the same time. sometimes ordering off the NAPA or Autozone website for local pickup (no shipping charges) is less costly.

Don't forget to check the dealer for parts or at least an online OE parts outlet. Sometimes they can even be less than parts stores(usually not), and you know the part is correct.

Real shops can be hit or miss, but choose c-list mechanics with extreme caution. Some are only equipped with a pliers and a blow torch for getting medieval on your buttocks!

At least it's not a modern car. Dual mass flywheels, concentric slave/throwout bearing assemblies and general clog have helped raise clutch job prices to $1500 or more.

good points all splatt, but you list one of the reasons I never intend to own a newer car, too much government mandated crap and BS to make them decent reliable cars, and way too much work to keep running properly.

I heard on the radio this morning that the city of Seattle is contemplating charging you a "pollution toll" to drive within their city limits. the debate is whether to charge drivers $8 or $10. just to drive within their city limits. Another reason not to go to Seattle.
