I had a parking ticket with Subaru on it... So I didn't pay out of principle (I was on interstate plates anyway).. Last I heard of it.

Some of my best friends (not exactly car people) call my car a subie even after they have borrowed it.. I don't mind really. sometimes it's not worth explaining.

I do tell them however not to try use the gearstick marked 2wd-4wd around the city.

Fortunately I don't get too worked up about it cause it happens to me a lot! Sometimes they are even standing behind it and can't seem to see those big face level letters.

My responses have varied widely from faking being highly offended and/or a gentle correction to nothing at all. Sometimes it's best for some people to remain oblivious. haha

Hmm,I was curious.I say,"Father forgive them, for they know not what they do," but then I get all squinty eyed just for fun.You remember the scene in "Fistful of Dollars "Where Squint says"I know you boys was just funning, but my mule don't see it that way. Now,if you'll just apologise, like I know you will....
Thats probably part of why I keep that little German Army shovel aside the tranny hump.Never know what yer gonna have to bury...:-) (Just kidding) Bob

Well - sometimes they ask "What year is that there TARDIS...?"
And I tell the truth: "It's an '86 Tardis-Tercel 4WD."
"WHO?"
"It was made in England."
And I've actually done this - with a straight face, yet..."

 "That's funny, it says Toyota all over it..."

or I tell them the story about how I thought I wanted a Suby and then I started noticing that a huge percentage of cars abandoned on the side of I5 between Portland and Seattle were Subarus... So I bought a Toyota.

Tom, I had to wikipedia TARDIS HaHa. Mine must be a time machine too, cause the radio almost always plays 80s music. :D

Well - I kinda painted over the name on the grille when I rejuvenated the plastic trim in '06, so it's less obvious. And the name on the hatch was replaced when I did the renaming.
I think the only noticeable place that still says "Toyota" is on the plastic supports for the rear cargo cover.
I've made it a practice to rename/rebadge my last 3 cars' OE identities as "Tardis" - funny - the last 3 were the current '86, the late, much-lamented, '86 626, and the then-new '83 T4WD...
Less a tribute to the show (which I certainly DID like), than a reference to the places the cars could take me - at least in my flights of fancy...Ahh, the romance of automobiles...

When I get called a subi my general response is "It's a toyota, respect it." Last time I got called a subi was when I was pulling a stuck car out of the snow and told a 2008 subaru wagon that he shouldn't try to go up a certain road. His exact words were "This kid's subi wagon has more ground clearance than mine, I don't think we'll make it" to which I responded " 'Yota!! " He corected himself

"no, it's a tercel". from there most everyone takes a second look and questions a tercel 4wd....and recently (pre-wreck) overs something for my "gas saver". isn't it sad that we have to look at a car made in 1984 with a freakn carb to save gas. i mean we are in the 2000 eees. budget unlimited i would be hard pressed to find a new equivalent.

[quote="jed budget unlimited i would be hard pressed to find a new equivalent.[/quote] They will only get better and better with age. So much goes into cars now that has absolutely nothing to do with getting from a to b and have been overcomplexified so that even the dealers doesn't like to work on them.

I'm proud to say my car has no "modules" (okay, igniter is close). Lots of new cars require 2-3 computers and a key that costs as much as either of my last 2 terc's just to crank the starter! How do you think these cars will be doing when they are 20+ years old? My dash clock will have lasted longer. My 84's last 50k, starting at 170k has been breakdown/repair free. Many newer cars can't make this claim starting at 0 miles

Getting off course on this post. I like archinstl's hilarious approach. Better to keep these our little secret. There's only so many left to go around!

it happened to me when I was getting his first emission test. The tech responded to the manager order to do the test... "The grey Subaru?"
I said, "ahhh Toyota"
The tech said "oh....sorry"

Whenever I visit my parents, they try to hand me a Subaru service manual that is sitting around their house.

"What would I do with that?"
"Isn't your car a Subaru?"
"No."

;)
