1987 Camry 2.0 16V engine
1987 Camry 2.0 16V engine
I have a question about 2.0 litres 16V Camry engine from 1987. Is it an interference engine? I found booth yes and no answers.

What any manual says can be irrelevant. About the easiest way to know is to put a belt on it. Otherwise pull the cam and do a leakdown test on all cylinders. I've seen numerous interference engines survive timing mishaps..

Which engine exactly is it?
If it is the 3S, it is non-interference.
If it is the 3S, it is non-interference.

Re: 1987 Camry 2.0 16V engine
our Mazda MPV mini van with 3.0 v-6 is listed as interference engine, but we have lost or broken the time belt several times in the 300k plus miles we have owned it. Never harmed the engine.
I have seen really nice ones for sale cheap, because owner was told the engine needs to be replaced and would cost $3000 after the timing belt broke. I thought about showing up at the guys house with my tools, giving him the $300 he as asking for it, replace the belt in his driveway and than start it and drive it home. But that might be too cruel.

Re: 1987 Camry 2.0 16V engine
Was that Mazda MPV with automatic or manual transmission? I have pretty bad experience with Fiat 1.6 16V and manual transmission. I had to change engine after time belt broken at low speed (40 km/h). In high speed it would be a massacre.
Yes, in that Camry it is a 3S engine. It was an academic question.
Today I spend 8 hours on roads just to visit car for sale. In telephone it looked nicely, car with MOT, in last two years it made just about 5 000 kms, driver, good shape... What I found was a car with very little signs of rust, but used as workers crew car (two stolen one meter long pieces of rail in trunk), some trim missing, tyres cracked all the way round, no MOT, dead battery... That car was even parked on street by railway station with keys in drivers door
