help naming dog

Post by dlb »

we just adopted a 7 month old female mutt but we hate the name she came with -- 'bella.' lame. does anyone have any suggestions for names that sound remotely similar? we don't want to confuse the dog with something completely different so we've thought about 'brella (as in umbrella), stella, and fella. not pumped on any of those. if anyone has any ideas, please throw them out here.

What a cutie David! Don't worry about making the name sound similar, she will quickly adapt. Is she wearing an invisible fence collar?

This will give you a chance to talk about our little guys when someone asks "What kind of name is 'Tercella?' Is that Latin?"

nice looking mutt. you can change the name to anything you want by simply saying there own name first and than the new name. use that for a week or two and than start dropping off the old name.

You might consider that when you say "Tercel" meaning the car, the dog may think you are taking about her.

I think Tercella is cute, but I am not sure my wife and daughters would approve (all of them hate my Tercel), they would think naming a family pet after the Tercel would be a terrible curse. I know we all like our Tercels, but others think they are ugly ducklings of a car.

my pal suggested 'yella' as in country bumpkin-speak for 'yellow', which i really liked but that was quickly vetoed. looks like stella it is. i'm not mad about it but we have to choose our battles with our loved ones wisely.

I always think people should name their dogs some long, weird 1800's person name. That way, when you call the dog out at the park in public, people look and think it's strange. The same should go for kids.

Awww, cute dog! If you decide to not go with Stella, the method described by Petros to change her name does indeed work. Many years ago when I was a kid, we ended up with a rescue dog named Pebbles (as in Flinstones, I assume). We all thought it was a dumb name. So we changed it via the method Petros described. My mom picked the new name, Daffy (the duck, because this dog was pretty looney tunes due to abuse by previous owner). So for one week she was Pebbles-Daffy. The next week she spent it being called Daffy-Pebbbles. And the following week she was suddenly just Daffy. Name changed!
