Really cool Tercel SR5 3-door hatch

Post by Jooseppi Luna »

This really cool Terc popped up in my craigslist recently:

Image

I had never seen one before, but I like it! The rear end is really snappy-looking.

He is asking for $2200. he writes:
I have a 1982 Toyota Tercel SR5 for sale. The car has a 1.5 Liter 4 cylinder engine inside of it. The transmission is a 5 speed manual. The interior has a tan color and there are no cracks anywhere in the passenger compartment. The windshield was just changed as the oil, coolant, timing belt and water pump. The only thing the car needs to get going is a rear trailer arm it snapped. Toyota recalled these trailing arms because they didn't put protective coating on them and therefor they rot. The underside of the car is clean with no rot. Car runs and can drive if you change the trailer arm. I'm also open to trades.
I kind of want it... but I have too many projects...

I also have 8 vacuums, 8 typewriters, 5 sewing machines, and two lawnmowers...

Interesting find. the SR5 version of the first gen tercel is fairly rare, though I do not know if that makes it more valuble. It should have the same instrument cluster as the T4wd SR5, with the tachometer. Not sure it is worth that much since it needs fixing, and who knows what else it may need, you have no way to test driving it before you buy it.

Whatever that is I'm sure it could be fabricated if need be - trailing arm sounds suspension related, even if its internal, bring old part to iron casting place, might be doable for under $1500, then have it galvanized.
It takes more fossil fuel resources to produce new vehicles than it would take to maintain and fuel any 70's or 80's vehicle for a million miles.

Odd that the arm was (apparently) never replaced - the recall was in 1986 - 29 years ago.

Yeah, I really want one but that is way too far away.

Peter, the SR5 hatchbacks (both first and second gen) are highly sought after!

That was what I was wondering, too. Could you get corrosion issues fixed under recall on a 33-year-old New England car? The more cynical side of me imagines that the conversation with the dealer would go something like this:

Dealer: "Hello, this is Honest Al's Toyota. How may we help you?"
Customer: "Yes, I'd like to ask about getting recall work performed on my 1982..."
Dealer: *Hangs up*

Really? Cool. If someone wants, I might be able to check this car out for a board member over the next week (I'm on spring break).

Are those wheels stock?

I had a customer (pre '03) who had one of these.
We had many enjoyable conversations about it and my '83 T4WD.
It was a pretty cool car and eminently appreciable in this day.

Well, I was trolling CL tonight, and apparently, this one is still for sale... and the price has dropped by $1000 to $1200. I wish I had the room.
