refurbished rear axle photos

Post by c_j »

I spent a while cleaning and painting this rear axle, so I thought I'd share some pictures:

New items:
Differential gasket
3 emergency brake cables
2 wheel cylinders
brake hold-down kit
left and right brake self-adjuster kits
set of brake shoes
2 brake drums
2 brake hoses and clips
2 steel brake lines
4 rubber insulated (brake) line clamps and flange bolts
4 stainless steel M6 wheel cylinder bolts & washers
1.1 quarts of Mobil 1 75w90

Everything black is two coats of brushed-on POR-15. Some parts were prepped properly with cleaner/degreaser and metal prep / others were just washed with brake cleaner (not recommended). Black touch-ups done with gloss black engine enamel rattle-can. Wheel cylinders are white engine enamel and POR-15 piston-ends. The grey bits are Zinc-mate / sacrificial zinc spray on bleeder screws and brake hose ends). Yellow axle bolts were from a leftover spray can. Bleeder screws were wrapped with teflon tape to help with vacuum bleeding. Brake drums are painted inside and out (except for the brake shoe contact area) with Plasti-kote Hot Paint HP-14 (a silicone-based resin) and baked in the oven (non-household oven of course  ). Copper anti-seize on all fasteners, even brake line nuts.

There are a lot of flaws in the coatings (chips and peels), also places where I didn't prep properly and the paint didn't stick. So I expect it to rust up much quicker than if I did a 'really good' job instead of just a 'good' job. It took too much time but it was fun and nice to know everything should last longer than the rest of the car.
