Possible quick fix for horn that does not work

Post by xirdneh »

fixed the horn on two Tercels today
I removed both horns and when tested neither sounded off
I had nothing to lose by pounding on them so I did
both started working after the 4th or 5th strike with handle of a ratchet
Next time, instead of removing them I will try pounding on them while they are still in the car
from under car you would have to reach up under back side of driverside head light
not much room to get a good whack but worth trying

one of the cars also had a bad connection under the steering wheel
there is a spring loaded brass rod about .19 in diameter in steering column that rides against a circular brass plate (on back side of steering wheel)
that spring loaded brass rod wears down until it gets too short to make contact
I drilled a .2 diameter hole about 1/4" deep in a 5/16" dia piece of brass rod that was about 3/8" long
I slipped that over the existing spring loaded brass rod
should put some electronic grease on it but i had none so i used a little graphite (anti seize thread compound) as that was all I could come up with
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

i had my own quick horn fix recently. the horn on my friend's corolla all trac didn't work and when i removed it, i noticed a lot of corrosion on the plug connections. i scraped both ends as clean as i could with a small flat blade screwdriver and then sprayed them with pb blaster. i plugged the horn in but it still didn't work. i slid the plug on and off a bunch of times to make sure it was cutting through whatever corrosion was still there. it still didn't work but my friend didn't really care so we left it at that. a few days later, he tried the horn and it worked. i guess the pb blaster just needed more time to eat through some of the corrosion.

Would various contact cleaners be better for, well, cleaning contacts?
I've never had to face electrical corrosion, but make it a habit to spray electrical connections before tightening down.

I repaired my horn just the other day, using the info in this Sticky:

took all of 30 minutes from start to finish
