i have seen the bottom lug on the alloy rims and the top center one on the steel rims. never seen the other two though.

did you make the diagram of the allot lug? i like that.

the center acorn shaped nut I am told is a standard Toyota lug nut for Toyota steel wheels, the lower one is common to all Toyota alloy wheels. At least for the model years of the Tercel4wd, possibly longer.

Interesting feature on the alloy lug nut is it has a tapered end so you can still mount a spare with the steel wheel.

I just upgraded from the stock steel rims to a set of 14" alloys off of a civic hybrid, am I safe using the lugs for the steel rims or should a set designed for alloys?

i would use any of the top 3 acorn-style lug nuts shown here, but not the toyota alloy wheel-specific nut on the bottom



because the one on the bottom doesn't have as much taper to center the it on the wheel. it will still work (i have done it) but the acorn style are preferable since they have more taper.

The bottom one is a mag-style lugnut. Toyota frequently uses those on their modern aluminum alloy wheels.

Honda has one more type of acorn nut with a curved taper seat rather than a flat taper seat.

any nut will hold the wheel on, if the seat is the wrong angle you risk having it work loose. so it is a good idea to check if they are tight every few days. You can also develop corrosion between the steel nut and alloy wheel (dissimilar metals can do that), so I use come kind of corrosion inhibiting compound like the spray LPS or Corrosion-X on it.

I used the OE style (dlb's #2 above) on my Miata Daisy wheels in 2010, and they seem eminently OK.
I did have to replace a few (due to Sears' Smyrna IDIOTS) when I bought Goldie in '05, but all has been cool since then. I've not noticed any wear on the Daisy wheels.
I do use NeverSeize on the threads and on the seats of the nuts.

I take it than you will be doing a lot of cussing than.

As much as it is tempting anthropomorphize our cars, they are simple machines that only do what we make it do, or what nature allows it to do. it does not have a will, so you must either force it to do your will, or it will do what nature allows it to....corrode away, fall apart, and eventually return back to the earth from whence it came.

it is one of the laws of thermodynamics: the disorder will always increase, unless you put energy (your own energy, and will) into the system.

My bedroom resembles this law of nature...good thing my wife puts energy into it regularly or we would always live in disorder.

I usually save the cuss words when the car injuries me when I am trying to make it better. Sometimes I feel like it is trying to hurt me on purpose....but I know better.
