Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

my friends red tercel wagon
standard 3a engine
he drove it about 100 miles like that before coming to my place
it was knocking/clanging pretty loud
we pulled engine and replaced it with a one a little better
it was the number three piston and it damaged the cylinder a little bit
so i'm scrapping the block

I have a couple of those in my garage too, I was going to use them to make "car art".

The block can be reused but it has to be bored out to the next oversize and use with oversize pistions. This happens when the bores get worn and then the is slop in bore (too much clearance). You get a tell tale noise at certain rpms there is a hollow rattle (called piston slap), eventually the fatigue on the skit will cause it to fail. Even if the bore was not scratched you can not use the block without reboring it because there is too much clearance due to the wear. this is caused by either running it with dirty oil, or without an air cleaner, fine grit grinds away the cylinder walls as it runs.

why don't you just post picture rather than the link? it saves a few clicks.

It always seems to be #3 with bottom end trouble...

How many miles? Looks like the piston was in otherwise decent shape. That busted piece looks smooth and no scratches/grooves.

it had over 250,000 on speedo
but the previous owner may have re-built it
he cannot remember (he has messed with so many Tercels he cannot remember what he did to most anymore)
the engine was useing oil and i believe it got too low to many times
the broken off parts did not look bad
the machine marks were still there
the piston was worn and shiny just in front of or behind the wrist pin
but that probably came on after it was broken

When I rebuilt the engine for the '83, I noticed that the gudgeon pin (wrist pin) was binding on the piston causing the piston to not rotate around it as it should (i.e. it would bind up and take a good bit of force to get it to move). This, in itself, prompted me to replace the pistons and pins. This might be a contributing factor in the skirt failures that people have seen. Just a thought.
