just one thing i couldn't find, i'm in the process of cleaning off gasket material. you mentioned wire wheel for the block, how about the head? i've heard of using a brass wire wheel? thoughts?

My cam shaft is blocking the head bolts. I'm very confused.

You need to pull the cam, to get clearence to the head bolts. larry

Thanks Larry, that's what we were leaning toward. Just wasn't in the procedure, wanted to make sure we wouldn't cause damage. Not a mechanic.

I have done it without removing the cam, but it can be tricky. There's a flat part of the cam there that allows sticking a socket in there.

Hmmm...we tinkered for a bit I couldn't manage to get them going.

The bolts have a flange under the head of the bolt that doesn't clear the cam shaft on the driver side. No flats on the cam shaft. Is this somehow not stock?

In that picture you posted you can see the "flat part" just to the left of the center of the camshaft.

Yeah. Some pitting on the head; and the rust in the cylinder might have killed it.
