Intermittent Wipers..

Post by dcn »

FYI: 1984-1989 4Runner wiper/4-way flasher/headlight assemblies fit Tercs!! Dad did his today, took a little bit of cutting the steering column housing (4-way flasher button's bigger for example on the trucks) but it works! He now has intermittent wipers on his car and I'm hoping to have 'em soon myself.

My SR5 Tercel has intermittent wipers already, but they are not adjustable. First position has it wipe about once every 5-6 seconds. Does the 4Ruinnder use an adjustable intermittent wiper? If so that might be worth a look. I wonder if you can swap out the flasher button assembly.

Yeah! That's what I mean Petros! My SR5 has a couple positions like yours, but the 4Runners have a dial that includes those settings plus like 10 and 15 seconds. He had to make a small cut for the extra movement of the arm (since you replace the whole assembly), and the truck's 4-way flashers' button sticks a _little_ bit higher out of the column than the default Terc ones but it might be worth it to do. He came into our place tonight and I snapped a couple shots with my phone:

Kaboom Baby! And don't anybody post "Fake", we all know that's a Terc dash :D:

You can see the small cut that was required here, not too bad but I'm kinda on the fence cause I'm a meticulous nut over my interior:

I like it. I presume the connectors all just plug right in to the Tercel harness.

You can always make a black vinyl or leather "boot" to cover the larger hole you cut in the column cover.

This is great news for us Deluxe owners, since the Deluxe is the budget model without intermittent wipers at all. OK, well, it is manually intermittent. This appears to be a better option than replacing it with the SR5 universal switch. Thanks!

If memory serves me right, intermittent wipers with delay was an option available on the '86 Tercel model year and on, there is a section for them in my '86 wagon's owners manual. I have not seen them before in person, and for sure they were only offered on the SR5 trim model. I would also suspect that if AE82 model Corollas had that option available, that the turn signal/wiper switch assembly would also swap over with minimal, if any modification at all.

Other than the small cut on the right hand side so the wipers will clear in the full On position, I think a screw has to be filed off somewhere at the top of the steering column. e said it's not that hard of a job at all, it's just not a simple plug in and done.

dcn - what I wanna know - what is the name of the breeder of that miniature dachshund? Does your Dad have a comfy mini-kennel for it in the ashtray - or does it have an airy lair in the sunglass cubby?

one of those combo switches from a '84-89 4Runner is for sale now on eBay...
looks like it also has cruise control

price seems a bit steep though, $50

some good close-up photos on the auction site, including one of the connector

FYI, i just took a look at the wrecker and the AE82 corollas i saw did not have adjustable intermittent wipers but the '84-'89 pickups did. got some for mine, can't wait to put them in today.

*edit* just went to put this in and while the large plugs mate up, there is a separate plug for the intermittent timing adjustment, and of course there is no corresponding plug on the terc. i PM'd dcn to ask how his dad wired this up so hopefully i will hear from him soon. i'll post pics when it gets done.

has anyone else done this mod? any info?
