the clunking sounds like bad CV joints. when wheel bearings go bad they make a constant grinding sound, not clunk. clunking is almost certainly the cv joints, you replace the axles to replace the CV joint. It could be possible both are bad, but wheel bearings last a very long time and seldom fail, while CV joints regularly wear and usual need to be replaced at 4 to 6 year intervals (depending on how far you drive each year).

Impress upon your mechanic to only buy new replacement axles, and not to go for rebuilt cv axles. New ones are getting more difficult to find, the rebuilt ones are junk and do not hold up very well, some are bad right out of the box. Have him look around for a supplier that can supplier new axles, no re-manufactured. You can order them from Rockauto.com at a good price.

Once the axles are out it is easy to check the condition of the wheel bearings. They can be spun by hand and felt for roughness and play.
