Clutch trick

Post by keith »

Here is the clutch trick I promised. Maybe everyone else has already figured this out and I only think I've come up with something new. The wrench gives great mechanical advantage when connecting or disconnecting the clutch cable.

I just yelled it into submission until it worked.

Good idea though, I must say.

Another method would be to put a stick between the seat cushion and the clutch pedal to release the cable?

Clever trick with the Crescent - whenever I get around to my writeup on doing the tierods, I did a similar trick with one and a jack.

Why not just remove the spring inside that tensions the clutch take-up? It takes about 25 sec and less than that to hook it back up. Tehn you rotate the plastic gear that the cable hooks into, and Voila! you have ~ 1.5" of play. reverse process to reassemble.

I don't fit under the dash, besides there's the right way, the wrong way and my way.

I can get it off by hand fairly easily, part of it is practice (i've taken the engine out 4 times now) but part of it is probably it being an old car with tired springs, etc.

I've never had a problem pulling it off by hand, but the crescent wrench is a good idea.
