Stuck Axle Removal with my contraption.

Post by YoYoTercel » Mon Apr 06, 2020 2:17 pm

Well, after buying a CHEAP axle, I realized that the axle got stuck during installation and I could not pull it out.
So, I started the process of finding ways to remove it.
- Tried the pry method. Using many different angled pry bars. It's still stuck....but no damage to the transmission housing.
- YouTube - Tie a wire around the axle and sledge hammer and pull away. No luck.
- YouTube - Tie a wire around the axle and heavy jack and pull away. No luck.
- YouTube - Use the vice grips and hammer away. No luck.
- YouTube - Drill a hole big enough to place a thick allen key into the hole. Use the slide hammer and whack away - SUCCESS.

What ever way works for you....here's what I learned:
- The pulling has to be done as centered as possible. Side pulls are possible for less stuck axles, but centered is best.
- A slide hammer is the best. It might take a few extra blow, but it will eventually come out.
- Be patient.

Here is my contraption:

Wow, interesting. I've never had a stuck CV so I've always just tapped a really fat flat-blade screwdriver between the trans and inner joint. I assume you tried that first. Note that there's no prying involved, it's just tapping a kind of wedge in until the CV pops out.

On rear axle shafts, I've had a few really stuck ones. One time I had to get creative like you but mine was much more caveman-ish. i made a white trash slide hammer with the brake drum and a length of heavy rope. i threaded the rope through the two holes of the axle, gave it a couple feet of slack, tied the rope through the center hole of the brake drum, and then tossed the brake drum outward a few times. It worked well.

Haha Dlb, I tried the "cave man" approach as well. It unfortunately did not work. After a while, I realized that I needed a good puller.
