Pilot bearing removal...with (virtually) no mess.

Post by slimdude85 »

I stumbled across another method of removing the clutch pilot bearing where clean up just requires a broom. Unless you do it outside, then you just feed the birds like Hansel and Gretel. That's right, I'm talking about baked goods. As has been discussed using wet paper towels or grease, this method uses bread as the medium instead. Just get some bread(the more moist, the better...and if it's getting moldy you won't be throwing money away), a bolt with the same OD as the bearing ID (12mm in our case, and turns out the bolt that mates the bell housing to the engine fits this description), and a rubber mallet or brass hammer(unless the bolt is a spare, then use whatever hammer you like). Stuff the cavity with the bread, take your bolt and place it in the bore of the bearing, and hammer away. Add bread as needed until the bearing pops out. Then, get your preferred digging tool (screwdriver, pick, awl, welding rod, etc.) and scrape the bread out of the cavity in the crankshaft. Afterwards, feed the birds and make yourself a sandwich with the leftovers. You deserve it(unless the bread is moldy, then throw it away. Ingesting mold can be hazardous to your health).
Do not be afraid of sudden fear nor of the onslaught of the wicked when it comes; For the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.

What if you are gluten free? No bread around here any more. I have a home made puller, no mess.

Gluten free bread would probably work. Not much good for anything else, as I don’t consider it suitable for human consumption...HA!

Me neither, that is why I do not eat bread much anymore.
