Easy half shaft oil seal installation

Post by Bdeal223 »

Had to do front drive shaft oil seals tonight and found a pretty easy way to get them in correctly. Looked for something that was the same diameter as the seal and found a oil bottle cap that fit perfectly. It was off of a Shell Rotella T 1-gallon oil bottle, slid right over the seal and I tapped it in nice and easy with a rubber mallet. Hope this helps someone.

that's awesome. i've always found these things to be a real treat to replace, tapping around the edge with a punch, trying to keep it even, knocking it out and into the dirt, cursing and having to clean it off and start fresh, repeating this several times, throwing the new seal out because i've eventually warped the damn thing, starting over with another...

so i really, really look forward to trying your oil jug lid trick next time.

Just did this. Perfect seal driver. I used a paint marker to draw a line on the cap at the recommended installation depth so that when it lined up with the differential I knew it was both in deep enough and straight.
