Oil Drain Plug Gaskets

I went to change my oil, and I bought the gasket from Autozone. It leaked like a sieve. The ring was not as wide as that which came off the car, but I could not reinstall that because it was cracked. So I went to NAPA and their gasket worked. Moral of the story-NEVER buy drain plug gaskets at Autozone. Well now I'm off to clean the massive amount of oil on my driveway. Later...

none of the four tercels i maintain have oil plug gaskets
been using "form a gasket" (non-hardening) in a tube
wipe excess oil off plug and lay a bead of gasket compound
wipe oil hole (does not have to be totally clean)
install plug
works 100%

Is that like the plumber's putty, or is it specifically for cars?

I have a nylon washer...works real well if I don't leave it laying in the bottom of the drain pan....loose.

the company name is permatex
"form a gasket sealant"
its primary use is for cars
its always in the sealant section of the local auto stores
comes in tubes (like toothpaste) about 5 inches long and 3/4 diameter
there are two types "non-hardening" and "hardening"
i use "non-hardening" for the oil plug and all gaskets except for the
head gasket and manifold gasket. i also smear it on o-rings for the cooling system. also on the valve cover gasket in the area of the front cam seal to prevent leaking into timing belt area. using this stuff on gaskets may not be necesary but just an extra precaution.
have never had a gasket failure when that stuff is on it.
"non-hardening" option makes gasket removal much easier
